The children put their understanding of colour mixing into practise to recreate their own versions of the artwork ‘0-9’ Numbers in Colour created by the artist Jasper Johns in 1958-59.

They looked closely at Jasper’s work deciding what the subject was (numbers and primary colours) and then became colour detectives! Their job was to detect which primary colours he had mixed to create the secondary colours in various parts of the painting. We learnt the term ‘impasto’ which means that paint is used thickly. Jasper used thick paint to create the effect he wanted.

Once they had created their own paintings using the knowledge of colour mixing and different sized brushes to create different brush strokes they compared their work to Jasper John’s.
