The children in Upper School will be visiting the Houses of Parliament on Tuesday 1st April therefore we decided we needed to learn about what happens there and how UK parliament works. We spent a lesson getting to know the background of our Parliamentary process and what the House of Commons and House of Lords looks like. The children were really interested in who their MP was and what they do!
Today we looked more closely at the workings of the Chambers and how laws are agreed upon. The class were given a blank ‘bill’ to write their own ideas for a new law- one that would affect the children and teachers of our school in a positive way. Pairs and small groups discussed what they would like to see happening and wrote their thoughts and ideas down. Each pair/group then shared their bill with the class and we used a hands in the air voting system to find out the three most popular bills put forward. These were…

1. Bring your pets to school every Friday

2. School lockers for Upper School

3. No school uniform

These bills were then debated one at a time with the children putting forward some excellent questions and arguments for and against each bill.

at the end of the session, the class voted on ballot papers for their favourite bill of law and they put them into the ballot box. These were counted and Tyreece and Nathaniel’s bill of bringing in ‘School Lockers’ was the most popular choice!
Well done Upper School on completing a democratic process in a mature and sensible way!
We now can’t wait to go to London and see the Houses of Parliament in real life!
