Today the children in Upper School were introduced to a new graphic novel, The Arrival by Shaun Tan that we will be studying for the next few weeks. I did this through a display with items that the children discovered and discussed. We focused the learning through use of modal verbs in our questioning and statements about the book. There was a plain bag with a flat cap, some thick gloves, a wrapped up photo in a frame, a picture drawn by a child in it. The children loved making predictions from the pictures and items. Abbi said that she thought that the picture MUST be precious since it had been wrapped with cloth. Tyreece wondered if the man COULD be a refugee because he was obviously going on a journey and didn’t have much with him. Some children asked questions such as why they looked so sad in the pictures. We will find out more in tomorrow’s lesson!
