Middle School have enjoyed exploring more of ‘Stig of the Dump’ by Clive King, with a particular focus this week on ADJECTIVES and NOUNS…
First, we unpicked adjectives in the story before thought showering our own to describe what Barney would have seen in the chalk pit. We drew annotated pictures of the chalk pit to share what we each envisaged.
To help build up our vocabulary, we closed our eyes and listened to sounds of a woodland and birdsong. Imagining they were Barney, they had to think about what they could see in different parts of the pit…imagine what it would be like to fall in and look around…explore…reach out and hold items…
We then opened our eyes, got up and explored the ‘chalk pit’ (our classroom). Reaching out, picking up, holding up…before…FREEZE!! The children were asked what they were holding, looking at…and then asked further questions to encourage them to use adjectives to be more specific…
Now the ‘chalk pit’ was real to the children and alive in their minds, they were ready to describe the things they found…as Barney…
We loved hearing the written descriptions created by all the different ‘Barneys’ and the children showed brilliant active listening by silently counting adjectives used and being ready to recall how certain nouns were described.
Super job, Middle School!
