In our Science lesson this week, the children completed their Classifying Living Things topic by taking part in a field study of the school grounds. They took clip boards and species lists outside and identified as many of the animals and plants we have in our school fields. After the children had made their lists and taken photos of the things they couldn’t identify, we came back to class to use the Internet to discover what those unidentified species were and to classify all our discoveries into a field guide. We had to sort the animals and plants into mammals, insects, arachnids, molluscs, birds, amphibians, annelids and flowering plants. We found that on a hot and sunny afternoon, there were not that many different types of animals in our school grounds but we did find lots of different plants and trees!
