In Middle School, we are learning to develop active listening strategies through various different ways and across multiple areas of our learning.
As part of our PSHE topic - exploring identity, interests and strengths - are learning to build confidence to stand in front of our class to share something of interest to us or things that help to make us who we are. The children who have shared so far have been absolutely brilliant and helped to encourage others to think of things they could share. Listeners need to show eye contact and track the speaker. When questions are welcomed, children need to listen carefully to ensure they are asking new and relevant questions.
In English, children are learning to show active listening by responding to our current story with annotations, drawings, notes, discussions and being encouraged to listen to one another, share our thoughts and make links.
Across the day, we show our opinion and answers through ABC signals: agree, build, challenge. This shows others that we are listening carefully and actively as they may be asked why they want to challenge or what they want to build on.
We are using copy back signals to practise careful listening: clapping rhythms which everyone has to copy but listening out for the rhythm not to copy!
You are just fantastic, Middle School!
