Like most years, our first Maths topic of the year is Place Value. We are exploring various ways of representing numbers to 1000 to really get to grips with the ‘onesness’ of ones, the ‘tensness’ of the tens and the ‘hundredness’ of hundreds. We have also explored numbers which include a zero…and have learnt that ‘Zero the Hero’ works as a placeholder. Across our learning, we are representing two and three digit numbers in a variety of forms: number, word, partitioned, drawing, practical…
Our latest challenge was to make given numbers using the base ten equipment…with specific equipment banned each time. In their pairs and small groups, they showcased their understanding of place value by exchanging tens into ones and vice versa. They also realised they could make bundles of 10 tens to make 100 when the hundred blocks were banned to make specific target numbers.
Super job, Middle School!
