This week, we had the fantastic opportunity to attend 'Let's Learn Moor 2024'.
The children participated in many fun and educational activities to learn more about how we manage the moorlands in Lancashire. To start the day, we met with the police. They showed us some of their equipment and showed us how we would search a rural area for evidence. The children carefully swept the area and found all of the clues! This lead us to a safe full of squishy toys!
After this, the children met with firefighters who showed them how they would tackle a wildfire blaze on the moor. The children learned about preventing wildfires and some of the techniques used once a fire needed to be extinguished. We tried using leaf blowers - which are used to redirect the flames. We tried a heather beater, which can be used to stomp down flames. Finally, we had a go at squirting the hose!
Our third activity was learning about how gamekeepers do their jobs. The gamekeeper we met had lots of stuffed animals to talk to us about so we could learn the roles they play in the moors ecosystem. After this, we went to see the gundogs. The children loved meeting the dogs and seeing how clever they were to follow instructions so well!
After a lunch break, some of the children chose to have a try at plucking feathers from pigeons to prepare them for eating. One or two even had a try at dressing the pigeons! Once the hard work had been done, some children opted to try a bit of cooked partridge, grouse or duck as a reward for their efforts.
The final activity of the day was discovering some of the ecology of the river. Children looked at 'kick samples' taken from the river and explored to see which creatures were found. They really enjoyed using their charts to identify the different animals!
Overall, we had a fantastic and very informative day!
