As part of our investigation into adaptation, we decided this week to explore how animals cope in extreme environments. We wanted to know which animals would be adapted better to the cold. Our investigation led us to have three tubs of water.

one tub was left on the side - this represented bare skin.

one tub was wrapped in fur.

one tub was wrapped in bubble wrap, then fur on the outside - representing blubber or fat.

We timed five minutes apart and took the temperature for each tub. We found that blubber and fur were the best at keeping the water the warmest, whereas no protection at all left the water cold. Because of this, we knew that animals with blubber and fur would stay the warmest in the freezing arctic!
