We have begun learning about British garden birds this week as we are going to take part in this years Big Schools Birdwatch with the RSPB. After talking about the different kinds of birds we see in our gardens we did some birdwatching on our field. We talked about the birds’ habitats and how at this time of year it is more difficult for birds to find food. So we decided to help the birds and make some bird cakes.

It was very messy but a lot of fun making the bird cakes! The children enjoyed the sensory experience of mixing the seeds with the lard and making the cakes in shapes. They came out with great adjectives to describe the mixture and how it felt in their hands. The children followed instructions really well and then the next day they wrote their own, excellent instructions using lots of bossy verbs telling others how to make bird cakes.

We were so pleased we made the cakes on Monday as it snowed on Tuesday and we were able to hang them outside and give the hungry birds some treats.
