We have been learning about the meaning of Mothering Sunday to Christians. On the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter Sunday we visit our ‘mother church’ and give thanks. In the past, it was a day when children, who had gone to work as domestic servants were given a day to visit their mother and family. Often the children would collect flowers from the roadside or gardens from the big house where they worked, if they were allowed, to give to their mum as a present. Sometimes the cooks in the big houses where they worked would let the servants bake a cake to take home to their mothers as a gift too.

Today children give their mothers presents, flowers and home-made cards. The children made their mums some beautiful cards for Mother’s Day this year and plan to give them extra hugs today thanking them for being wonderful mummies!
