As part of our learning through our topic ‘The Great Outdoors’ we have been enjoying the story ‘The Scarecrow’s Wedding’ by Julia Donaldson.
We have been learning the story ready to help us with ideas to write our own adventure story with scarecrows as the main characters.
The Reception and Year 1 children have made puppets and played with them, really impressing me with their retelling of The Scarecrow’s Wedding and their own stories they have been making up. I was also really impressed with their growing independence as they measured to work out where the halfway point of their straws were. Lots of maths talk and thinking as they knew the two parts had to be equal length to make a half. All the children cut the straws and attached their puppets to them with sellotape, judging sizes and making decisions as to where to cut the sellotape for it to be the right size.
The Year 1 & 2 children did a drama activity acting out a scene from the story and then holding a freeze frame of the action. They have been using photos I took of their freeze frames to write sentences describing the action and use expanded noun phrases to make their sentences really interesting!
The Reception children have been busy learning and rehearsing the rhyme ‘Dingle Dangle Scarecrow’ ready to perform it to the rest of the class next week. We can’t wait to see it!
