We have been thinking about all the things we are grateful for in Lower School and also thinking about our hopes for the future for ourselves and the world around us.

Our discussion began with a lovely charity book called ‘Big H and Little h’ that was kindly sent to us by Victoria the author as a present! The story is about a small dog who longs to run and play like the others but as he gets older he gets weaker rather than stronger. However, Big H and Little h never give up hope and when the Supervet gets involved Little h gets kitted out with some go-faster gadgetry and his wishes come true. The children really love the story.

The book has been written to raise money for research into the disease Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy trying to find a cure. The author’s nephew, Harrison, sadly suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and the children learnt about what this is by looking at their website http://www.harrisonsfund.com . It provoked a lot of thoughtful discussion and made us focus on one of our Christian values, thankfulness, thankful for hope and the power of kindness and resilience in overcoming adversity.

The children wrote their hopes on stars and we all worked together to create a beautiful big collage rainbow.

The Reception children sorted through magazines cutting out pictures, colour sorting and matching. They were making their fingers strong to help them hold a pencil for writing with all the tearing, ripping and scrunching of the paper to make the rainbow.

The Year 1 & 2 children learnt a new technique of dragging paint across paper with a piece of cardboard to create a fabulous paint effect. They practised the technique on small pieces of paper first to learn how much pressure they needed to put on the cardboard and get a ‘feel’ of the technique. They loved it and are so proud of their rainbows (as am I!).
