So far in our learning we have been lucky enough to have received photos and videos of penguins all the way from the Falkland Islands and now we have news of pigs and piglets much closer to home!

This week our exciting learning continued, as my Family pig, Delilah, gave birth to 8 lively piglets. I captured their arrival into the world and brought many photos and live videos in to share with the children.

Lower school had such fun talking about Delilah and her new babies. We discussed that they grew in her tummy for 3 months, 3 weeks and 3 days. As a female Tamworth pig, Delilah was referred to as a ‘gilt’ until she had her first litter and is now a ‘sow’ and that Roger, the piglet’s Dad, is called a ‘boar’.

In our science lessons we’re learning about how animals grow and what they need to survive. The children watched the piglets suckle on their mothers teats and were taught that they’ll continue to do so for 6 weeks before moving on to solid fruits and vegetables.

The children are excited to watch the offspring grow into adults and I will keep taking lots of photos of them so that we can notice changes over time.
