As part of our Explorers topic we are doing a design and technology project where we are learning about mechanisms, in particular wheels and axles.
We have been reading the stories about Bob, the man on the moon, written by Simon Bartram and have decided to design and make a vehicle for Bob to travel around the moon and help him carry his heavy cleaning equipment around as he does his jobs.
Today the children started their project by thinking about what their vehicle will need to be like and why. They thought of some clever ideas: thick tyres so that they wouldn't sink on the moon's surface, space for Bob to sit, space for Bob's cleaning equipment and brushes attached to clean the surface as he drives. Then they talked about what materials and equipment they are going to need to make their model of the buggy.
They finished the activity by trying out different ideas for design by choosing from a variety constructions kits and building a vehicle that Bob could use on the moon.
Fantastic ideas and learning today Lower Schoool designers!

What great ideas and designs children. I was very impressed with your knowledge and technical vocabulary of the parts of a moon buggy when you were showing me your vehicles in your classroom.
