Today Magda from the Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service came to visit us. First of all we talked about smoke alarms, Theo explained what a smoke alarm was and what it did extremely well to Magda and the class. Spencer and Sofia told the class why the best place for the smoke alarm is on the ceiling. They explained that smoke rises up so it will reach the alarm faster if the alarm is on the ceiling. We learnt that smoke is the most dangerous thing in a fire.

Then Magda asked us what a fire plan was and we told her what our fire plan is in school and then discussed what their fire plans are at home. We watched a film with Filbert and Freddie who explained the dangers of fire and how best to keep ourselves safe. We learnt to stop the smoke spreading quickly we must keep the doors closed at night to stop smoke spreading quickly. The smoke alarm alerted everyone to wake up. You don't know if there is fire behind a door so to check whether or not to open a door you must put the back of your hand against the handle to see if it is hot. You must use the back rather than the front of your hand so that you don't burn the palm of your hands - you will need your hands to crawl along the floor to avoid the smoke.

Shout FIRE as loud as you can to anyone else in the house to wake them up as you crawl along the corridor under the smoke in the cleaner air. Get out of the house as quickly as you can. Never go back into the house for anything. Then when you are safely out goto a neighbour and ask them to phone the fire brigade. If you get trapped inside goto a window open it and shout for help.

Tonight we are all going home to ask our parents what the fire plan is in our house and practise it. The most important door to close is the kitchen as it usually has the most electrical items in it.

Thank you Magda, we have learnt some very important facts today.
