Upper School began their new topic this week which is looking at properties of materials. We began by thinking about the properties of solids, liquids and gases. To do this, the class were given three balloons. One filled with ice, one with water and one with air. We observed and felt each balloon. We came up with statements for the way that each balloon behaved such as the one with air was easy to move and change the shape of. After this, we cut the balloons open and saw what happened. We described how the air flowed out and disappeared into the room, the water poured out and filled the bottom of the container it went into, the ice didn’t move and had to be moved and pulled out of the balloon. It didn’t change shape unless we used a force on it.
Next lesson, the children are going to look more specifically at the properties of gases and they will conduct an experiment to determine whether gases have weight.
