We have continued to deepen our understanding of place value by comparing numbers.

We had some phone calls with Tiny Turtle, who thought that the starting digit was the only thing you needed to use to compare.

He thought 923 was greater than 1324. After lots of reasoning and super ‘Maths Talk’, Middle School were able to convince Tiny Turtle that it also depends which column the digit is in. They explained that the 1 in 1324 must have tricked him into thinking that was a smaller number at first but actually the 1 is worth 1 thousand - much greater than 9 hundred.

We compared lots of numbers and used the symbols < > = to show greater than, less than and equal to (remembering that the ‘crocodile’ always eats the greatest number!)

345 < 2613     7212 > 6001

Great job, Middle School!
