The children really enjoyed watching and reading the next section of our book, The Arrival, when the main character gets off the ship and is taken into a registration building like the one on Ellis Island in New York. They role played the scene with one child being the immigration officer and one child the man in the hat who has just arrived. They performed these role plays for each other showing the difficulties that the man must have had with communicating and understanding the whole process and situation he was in. It was actually very emotional to watch them.
We then used the role play work to help us understand how to combine descriptions and dialogue in our narrative writing.
