Our first Science topic of the year is ‘States of Matter’ and we started by discussing and identifying the different states: solid, liquid and gas.

Through discussion, we agreed that some things were clearly a liquid, solid or gas but sometimes it is tricky to tell as they might look, behave or seem like another state. Smoke, cream and ice were points of discussion leading to a discussion of changing state.

Water became a big point of talk with ideas on how you could change it to a solid from a liquid…and from a liquid to a gas…

To further explore this, we decided to set up a mini investigation with water in sealed containers (taped plastic wallets) placed in different places (shaded and in the line of sunshine). We also set up containers without lids outside and compared water levels throughout the day.

We made predictions and so far we are seeing results that show…

THE WARMER THE WATER THE FASTER IT EVAPORATES

and

THE COOLER THE WATER THE SLOWER IT EVAPORATES

Such super science vocabulary!!

We also learnt about how the particles would look in solids, liquids and gases. We used our play doh to create models of these!

Super job, Middle School!
