Whilst Reception have been busy mark making, exploring stories and learning to form letters (S, A and T) Year 1 and 2 have been busy revising sounds, learning how to apply these sounds to blend for reading and learning how to segment for spelling words.
We want to 'BEAT OUR SCORE' every week so love finding different ways to practise our spellings.
Year 1 and 2 have also thoroughly enjoyed exploring the story - 'Charlie and the Choosing Chair'. This is a story about choices and how we all have free will to choose but we must have knowledge of the choices to start with.
During our 'Charlie and the Choosing Chair' writing sessions, we all orally rehearse a sentence together, over and over, before adding it to our shared write. Each word is slowed down and stretched out so we can hear the different sounds. Year 1 and 2 race to find the best sound on their sound mats for us to use. We love exploring alternative spellings of words (f-er-s-t, f-ur-s-t, f-ir-s-t) as it really shows that we can try to spell almost anything if we use our phonics! It's just the mean, tricky words that make spelling difficult but we are learning to use our ever-growing Tricky Word wall to help with recognition and recall of these.
Well done, Lower School!
