To practice their knowledge of area and perimeter, middle school were given a challenge - to set up a zoo for mythical creatures!
They were given a list of the creatures they needed to house and their requirements and they set to work planning out where each of these animals would go. Children worked with a partner and used lots of maths skills to create these zoos. Not only did they need to give animals certain areas or perimeters, children needed to use their multiplication and addition skills to assure that the Dragon had an enclosure twice the size of the Unicorn - or they needed their shape skills to assure that the Kraken had a rectangular enclosure. On top of this, we needed a steady hand and accurate measuring skills with our rulers to make sure each enclosure was perfect!
