We’ve started our new science topic this week and we are learning all about animals. Firstly we had a good read of our knowledge organisers for our science topic and learnt some new facts and vocabulary. Then we went on a hunt for animals in and around our lovely school grounds.

We saw lots and recorded our findings noting what the animal was, where we saw them and what group they belonged to (whether they were mammals, birds, fish, reptiles or amphibians).

We saw lots of mammals and birds but no animals from the other groups. We discussed why this might be and the children came up with accurate ideas as to why not. For example they suggested that as we had no pond or lake in or next to our school field we wouldn't see any fish. We also discussed what animals might be living in the hedges that would be hiding from us or might have been moved to a different field. We are used to seeing sheep and cows in the field next to the playground, even though the sheep were not in the field today we saw evidence that they had been there as there was fleece from the sheep caught on the barbed wire fence.

I am very impressed with how quickly the children have learnt what makes an animal belong to a certain group. Well done Lower School superstars!
