Over a few lessons the children have learnt new skills through a design and technology project. They had to design and make a salad that contained a root vegetable following on from our science learning where we have been learning about plants.

Firstly the children looked closely at some fruit and vegetables, they had to describe the fruit or vegetable whilst it was inside a feely bag for their friends to try and guess what it was. When they revealed their fruit or vegetable the other children had to decide if it are above or below the ground. A lot of great learning took place in the discussion.

Then the children evaluated four different salads I made for them including: a beetroot salad, a potato salad, a carrot and raisin salad and a coleslaw. Take a look at these photographs ...

As a group we made a tally chart to record everyone’s choice of favourite from the four. The carrot and raisin salad won. In smaller groups the children then made their own carrot and raisin salad following a recipe. They loved smelling the olive oil and learning about olives then mixing it with lemon juice to create a dressing. I was very impressed with their excellent listening skills, knowledge of hygiene rules and how they used the tools safely.

After making their salad they evaluated their own and decided what they might change next time, one group decided they’d add less lemon juice and maybe a little olive oil to their dressing.

The words prepare, evaluate, observe and ingredients have been used as our words of the day this week and I have been so impressed with the children as they have used them throughout our project showing their good understanding. Please keep using the words at home.

Well done children you were all great learners!
