Today we had a visit from Magda a Firefighter and Gerry a Community Safety Advisor from Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.

We watched a short film with Freddie and Filbert which taught us what to do if a fire starts in our homes. We learnt that smoke is the most dangerous thing in a fire. Fire spreads very quickly so you must get out of your house as fast as you can. Never, ever go back into a burning building for any reason, that’s the Fire Brigade’s job.

We learnt how to make a fire plan.

Fit a smoke alarm in your house.

You must shut your doors at night to stop smoke spreading so fast.

You must have a smoke alarm to detect the smoke and wake you up.

You check that there is no fire behind a door before you open it you test to see if the door is hot by placing the back of your hand against the door. Never use the palm of your hand you may burn your hand. Do this on every door you have to go through not just your bedroom door.

Once you are out of the door, drop down and crawl along the floor so you don’t breathe the smoke in and shout “Fire!, Fire!” as loud as you can.

If the Fire gets too close, only as a last resort you can escape the fire by lowering yourself out of a window.

Get outside, call the Fire Brigade, stay OUT!

Tonight we are all going to check we have smoke alarms in our houses and test that are working.
